WTA: WTA roundup: Marketa Vondrousova fires 22 aces in Adelaide

Marketa Vondrousova of the Czech Republic hammered 22 aces in a 6-4, 6-7 (4), 6-2 first-round win against Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova on Monday at the Adelaide International in Australia.

It was Vondrousova’s first match since a first-round loss at Wimbledon six months ago followed by shoulder surgery in August. Her previous career high for aces in a match was nine.

No. 3 seed Daria Kasatkina of Russia defeated Australia’s Olivia Gadecki 6-2, 6-3 and No. 5 Paula Badosa of Spain rallied for a 6-7 (5), 6-3, 7-5 win over Peyton Stearns. Also advancing to the second round were Russia’s Ekaterina Alexandrova, Australia’s Emerson Jones and Kazakhstan’s Yulia Putintseva.

Colombia’s Camila Osorio breezed to a first-round upset in Australia with a 6-2, 6-3 defeat of eighth-seeded Yue Yuan of China.

Osorio saved eight of 10 break points and finished the day’s only match involving a seeded player in 1 hour and 38 minutes.

Russia’s Veronika Kudermetova was a 7-5, 6-0 winner over Italy’s Elisabetta Cocciaretto and Belgian Greet Minnen bested Bulgaria’s Viktoriya Tomova 7-5, 6-3. Argentina’s Maria Lourdes Carle outlasted Spain’s Jessica Bouzas Maneiro 6-3, 3-6, 6-0 and Hungary’s Anna Bondar prevailed 7-5, 6-4 over Egypt’s Mayar Sherif.
