WTA: WTA roundup: Garbine Muguruza opens with win at Eastbourne

Fifth-seeded Garbine Muguruza of Spain opened with a 6-1, 7-6 (7) win over Magdalena Frech on Monday in the first round of the Rothesay International in Eastbourne, Great Britain.

Countrywoman Sara Sorribes Tormo didn’t fare as well, losing to No. 16 seed Yulia Putintseva of Kazakhstan 7-5, 6-1. Czech seventh seed Barbora Krejcikova’s match against Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk was suspended after two sets, each player with a win apiece.

No. 17 Alison Riske fell to Magda Linette of Poland in a match that lasted three hours, nine minutes. Linette battled back to win 6-7 (3), 6-3, 7-6 (4) to advance.

Bad Homburg Open

Ninth-seeded Alize Cornet of France opened with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Anna Kalinskaya of Russia at Bad Homburg, Germany.

Germany’s own Angelique Kerber, the third seed, had her match against Russia’s Anastasia Gasanova suspended in the first set, with Kerber up 4-2.

Other first-round winners included Belgium’s Greet Minnen and Germany’s Jule Niemeier and Tatjana Maria.
