Ons Jabeur of Tunisia will not defend her title at the Mutua Madrid Open this week, withdrawing Monday due to a left calf injury.

“Further to many medical exams done, it shows that I have a small tear in my calf and I will need more time to recover,” the fourth-ranked player in the world said on social media.

Jabeur was injured in a semifinal match against Poland’s Iga Swiatek at the Stuttgart Open on Saturday and had to retire.

Jabeur won the Madrid title last season for her first victory in a WTA 1000-level event.

The 28-year-old reached back-to-back Grand Slam finals at the 2022 Wimbledon and U.S. Open and is hunting for her first Grand Slam title.
