Viane Cumber scored 22 points and knocked down the decisive 3-point shot with 3.7 seconds remaining as New Mexico upset No. 25 UNLV 69-66 in Mountain West play on Saturday afternoon in Las Vegas, Nev.
Cumber shot 6-of-11 from 3-point land and also had seven rebounds as the Lobos (13-6, 4-2 MW) handled the Rebels (15-2, 5-1) and ended UNLV’s 29-game Mountain West winning streak.
New Mexico was also boosted by Aniyah Augmon’s 15 points, seven assists, seven rebounds and four steals, and 10 points from Nyah Wilson.
Desi-Rae Young had a season-high 17 rebounds and 24 points to lead UNLV.
The Rebels — who saw their six-game win streak snapped — led by as much as nine points. The game was tied with 24 seconds to play after a layup from Young, but Cumber sank a 3-pointer on an assist from Augmon to put New Mexico ahead. Ashley Scoggin missed what would’ve been the game-tying 3-point shot for UNLV.
No. 7 Kansas State 69, Kansas 58
Serena Sundell and Zyanna Walker each scored 15 points to help the Wildcats hold off the Jayhawks in Manhattan, Kan.
Sundell also had seven assists and six rebounds for Kansas State (18-1, 7-0 Big 12), both of which were team-highs. Brylee Glenn added 13 points for the Wildcats.
Kansas (9-9, 2-5) was paced by Zakiyah Franklin’s 18 points, and 12 points and 10 rebounds from Holly Kersgieter. Starting center Taiyanna Jackson had multiple teeth knocked off moments into the game and did not return. S’Mya Nichols added 12 points for the Jayhawks.
The Wildcats never trailed. Their defense forced Kansas into 18 turnovers and held the Jayhawks to 2-of-15 shooting from 3-point range.
Kansas State was playing without starting center Ayoka Lee, who will be sidelined for about four weeks after having ankle surgery, the program announced Friday. Lee, who holds several program records for the Wildcats, is averaging 19.8 points and 8.2 rebounds per game. She missed all of last season following knee surgery.
No. 9 UConn 88, DePaul 51
Ashlynn Shade scored 21 points as the Huskies raced away from the Blue Demons in Storrs, Conn.
UConn (16-3, 8-0 Big East) also got 20 points and five assists from Paige Bueckers and 18 points from Aaliyah Edwards. DePaul (10-10, 2-5) was led by Maeve McErlane’s 15 points.
Bueckers scored 18 of her points in the first half as UConn led by 27 at the break. The Huskies scored 37 points off 27 turnovers by the Blue Demons.
It was the 12th straight win for UConn, and the Huskies’ first time playing on campus in more than a month. DePaul is now 0-4 this season against ranked opponents.
No. 11 Texas 76, Oklahoma State 66
Taylor Jones collected 18 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Longhorns over the Cowgirls in Stillwater, Okla.
Madison Booker chipped in 19 points and five assists for Texas (18-2, 5-2 Big 12), while Aaliyah Moore scored 17 points and Shaylee Gonzales had 15. Anna Gret Asi powered Oklahoma State (11-7, 4-3) with 22 points and five assists, and Hannah Gusters added 14 points.
Texas led by as much as 16 points and won comfortably despite shooting 1-of-6 from behind the arc. The Longhorns won the rebounding battle 39-24 and outscored the Cowgirls 40-24 in the paint.
No. 12 Baylor 77, UCF 74
Darianna Littlepage-Buggs scored 24 points on 9-of-9 shooting from the floor as the Bears outlasted the Knights in Waco, Tex.
Baylor (15-2, 4-2 Big 12) was also aided by Sarah Andrews’ first double-double of the season of 11 points and 10 assists, and 18 points from Dre’una Edwards. Kaitlin Peterson led UCF (9-7, 0-6) with 32 points, marking the fourth time this season she’s topped 30 in a single game.
Littlepage-Buggs scored 10 of her points during a 12-5 stretch of the fourth quarter. UCF trimmed the deficit to one point with 21 seconds to play, but never tied the game in the final frame.
Baylor shot 50 percent from the floor, won the rebounding margin by 12 and outscored UCF in the paint by 12.
No. 17 Gonzaga 89, Saint Mary’s 60
Kaylynne Truong scored 25 points as the Bulldogs comfortably beat the Gaels in Spokane, Wash.
Yvonne Ejim added 22 points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals for Gonzaga (18-2, 5-0 West Coast Conference) in its 12th straight win, while Brynna Maxwell added 14 points. Kayleigh Truong also scored 10 points. The Truong duo combined for 11 assists.
Tayla Dalton paced Saint Mary’s (8-10, 1-3) with 17 points, while Addison Wedin chipped in 16 points.
Gonzaga never trailed and led by as much as 30 points. The Bulldogs scored 23 points off 20 turnovers by the Gaels. Gonzaga was also a perfect 13-of-13 from the free-throw line.
