WNCAAB: Women’s Top 25 roundup: No. 3 Notre Dame dominates Virginia

Olivia Miles notched a triple-double (11 points, 10 rebounds, 14 assists) and Sonia Citron added 25 points and 11 rebounds as No. 3 Notre Dame dominated Virginia 95-54 in an Athletic Coast Conference matchup Sunday in South Bend, Ind.

Hannah Hidalgo scored 28 points and Liatu King chipped in eight points and 12 rebounds as the Fighting Irish (11-2, 2-0) jumped out to a 37-9 lead behind a 28-0 run, easily winning the battle of the boards (54-31), points in the paint (44-26) and fastbreak points (39-10).

Winning its sixth straight game, Notre Dame shot 51.4 percent from the floor and 38.5 from 3-point range while dishing out 32 assists on 38 made baskets.

For the Cavaliers (8-6, 0-2), Kymora Johnson led the way with 12 points on a day the visitors shot just 29.7 percent from the floor, including 23.8 percent on 3-point attempts.

No. 1 UCLA 91, Nebraska 54

The undefeated Bruins lowered the boom in the third quarter, outscoring the Cornhuskers 31-13 to turn a seven-point game into a rout in the Big Ten matchup in Los Angeles.

Lauren Betts led four scorers in double figures for UCLA (13-0, 2-0 Big Ten) with 21 points and added eight rebounds. Kiki Rice followed with 18 points on 8-of-8 shooting, including seven points in the third quarter. She also supplied six rebounds and four steals. Timea Gardiner added 15 points and Londynn Jones had 11.

Amiah Hargrove topped Nebraska (10-3, 1-1) with 12 points, and Callin Hake had nine.

No. 2 South Carolina 93, Wofford 47

Joyce Edwards scored 16 points off the bench to lead five players in double figures as the Gamecocks trounced the Terriers in Columbia, S.C.

Tessa Johnson added 14 points, Raven Johnson had 13, Te-Hina Paopao tallied 12 and MiLaysia Fulwiley netted 11 for South Carolina (12-1), which rattled off 17 straight points in the second quarter to open up a 36-14 lead. The Gamecocks never trailed and scored the game’s final 22 points to win their seventh straight.

Wofford (6-5) got 20 points from Rachael Rose but shot just 21.1 percent as a team and suffered its third straight loss. Evangelia Paulk managed five points on 1-of-18 shooting, though she did grab a game-high 11 rebounds.

No. 4 Southern California 78, No. 23 Michigan 58

JuJu Watkins went over 30 points for the third time this season, finishing with 31 as the Trojans blasted the Wolverines in Los Angeles.

Watkins did a good portion of her damage at the free-throw line, where she went 13-for-14. She also had five rebounds, seven assists, three blocks and three steals as Southern California (12-1, 2-0 Big Ten) won its eighth straight game. Kiki Iriafen added 18 points for the Trojans.

Michigan (10-3, 1-1) got 19 points from Jordan Hobbs but let USC put together a back-breaking 29-3 run bridging the third and fourth quarters.

No. 5 Texas 94, UT Rio Grande Valley 35

The Longhorns scored as many points in the game’s first 17 1/2 minutes as the visiting Vaqueros netted in total in a nonconference mismatch in Austin, Texas.

Kyla Oldacre netted 21 points on 6-of-6 shooting from the floor and went 9-of-10 from the free-throw line for Texas (13-1), which begins its Southeastern Conference schedule on Thursday. Madison Booker amassed 14 points, seven rebounds, seven assists and three steals, and Taylor Jones notched 11 points, nine boards and three blocks.

No player made more than three field goals for UT Rio Grande Valley (6-7), and its leading scorer was Kade Hackerott with seven points. She also had seven of the Vaqueros’ 37 turnovers. They shot just 27.1 percent from the floor.

No. 6 LSU 83, Albany 61

Aneesah Morrow tallied 10 points during the Tigers’ game-ending 25-2 run that helped them pull away from the pesky Great Danes in Baton Rouge, La.

LSU trailed 59-58 before Morrow’s three-point play with 7:41 left sparked the decisive surge. She finished with 20 points and 18 rebounds, including 10 of each in the fourth quarter alone. Mikaylah Williams scored 18 points, while Flau’Jae Johnson bundled 15 points with nine rebounds as the Tigers (15-0) wrapped up an unbeaten nonconference slate.

Kaci Donovan notched 17 points to lead Albany’s upset bid before fouling out with 4:15 left in the game. Kayla Cooper and Lilly Phillips each had 14 points for the Great Danes (10-3), who led by as many as 12 in the second quarter but missed their final 11 shots in the fourth.

No. 7 UConn 67, Providence 41

Paige Bueckers scored 14 of her game-high 23 points during a dominant first quarter that propelled the Huskies to a blowout win over the visiting Friars in Hartford, Conn.

Bueckers shot 5-of-5 from the floor in the first period and contributed eight points to a 15-0 run that helped UConn build a 28-6 lead after one. The All-American finished 8-of-12 overall, while Sarah Strong chipped in 14 points as the Huskies (11-2, 2-0 Big East) rebounded from a two-point home loss to then-No. 7 Southern California on Dec. 21.

Grace Efosa had 11 points and seven rebounds and Olivia Olsen paired eight points with 11 boards for Providence (7-8, 0-2), which surrendered 40 points off 31 turnovers.

No. 8 Maryland 72, No. 19 Michigan State 66

The Terrapins narrowly avoided their first loss of the season, thanks in part to Kaylene Smikle’s team-high 19 points in a hard-fought Big Ten Conference victory over the Spartans in College Park, Md.

Maryland (12-0, 2-0 Big Ten) led by nine entering the fourth period, but Michigan State (11-2, 1-1) staged a 9-0 run to tie the game at 57. Saylor Poffenbarger (14 points, 10 rebounds) halted the run with a 3-pointer as the Terrapins — who shot 42.9 percent from the field — took the lead for good with 5:06 left.

Theryn Hallock (20 points) and Julia Ayrault (17 points, 12 rebounds) kept the Spartans in it, but the visitors shot just 32.4 percent from the field, including 25 percent from 3-point range.

No. 9 Oklahoma 82, New Mexico State 64

The host Sooners put together a 12-0 run bridging the third and fourth quarters to pull away from the Aggies in Norman, Okla.

Raegan Beers led Oklahoma (12-1) with 19 points, 12 rebounds and four blocks. Sahara Williams tacked on 18 points and Payton Verhulst added 15, and all three players contributed to the late burst. Williams had four points, Beers netted a three-point play and Verhulst capped it with a jumper with 9:04 left in the game to push the lead to 13.

Molly Kaiser carried New Mexico State (7-6) with 24 points, including nine in the third quarter as the Aggies stayed close. Fanta Gassama followed with 13 points and seven rebounds, and Tylie Jones chipped in 11 points.

No. 10 Ohio State 77, Rutgers 63

Cotie McMahon and Ajae Petty each posted a double-double to help the Buckeyes earn a conference road win over the Scarlet Knights in Piscataway, N.J.

McMahon recorded 16 points and 11 rebounds, while Petty added 16 points with 10 boards before fouling out late in the fourth quarter. Chance Gray chipped in 15 points for Ohio State (13-0, 2-0 Big Ten), which racked up 22 takeaways and held a 29-7 advantage in points off turnovers.

Rutgers (8-5, 0-2) fell despite getting 31 points and 17 rebounds from Destiny Adams, who also had five steals and two blocks. The Scarlet Knights trailed 46-25 at halftime and never got closer than nine the rest of the way. Rutgers visits No. 8 Maryland next before hosting No. 4 USC.

No. 11 TCU 79, Brown 47

Hailey Van Lith led a trio of double-figure scorers with 17 points and the host Horned Frogs used a big third quarter to rout the Bears in a nonconference game in Fort Worth, Texas.

Madison Connor went 4 of 8 on 3-point attempts and finished with 14 points, and Taylor Bigby added 11 for TCU (13-1), which outscored Brown 24-11 in the third after leading by nine at halftime. Agnes Emma-Nnopu grabbed 14 rebounds.

Isabella Mauricio had 17 points and Grace Arnolie 13 for the Bears (6-7), who shot just 29.8 percent from the floor, were nearly doubled in rebounds (54-28) and were more than doubled in paint points (34-16).

No. 13 Georgia Tech 100, Pitt 61

Freshman Dani Carnegie poured in a season-high 24 points to help the Yellow Jackets pummel the Panthers in Atlanta.

Kara Dunn racked up 28 points for Georgia Tech (14-0, 2-0 Atlantic Coast Conference), which shot 50.7 percent and hit triple digits for the first time this season. Chazadi Wright had 16 points and Tonie Morgan contributed 15 with eight assists.

Khadija Faye led Pitt (8-7, 0-2) with 22 points, while Brooklynn Miles scored 11 and Aislin Malcolm chipped in 10 off the bench. The Panthers finished 39.3 percent from the floor and committed 21 turnovers.

No. 15 Tennessee 114, Winthrop 50

In their final tune-up before opening Southeastern Conference play, the Lady Volunteers built a 29-point halftime lead with a balanced attack and coasted over the Eagles in Knoxville, Tenn.

Sara Puckett finished with a game-high 17 points and a team-high eight rebounds for Tennessee (12-0), which begins SEC play on Thursday at Texas A&M. Ruby Whitehorn scored 16, Jewel Spear and Kaniya Boyd added 15 apiece, Zee Spearman chipped in 14 and Tess Darby had 10 as the Lady Vols shot 53 percent from the field.

In their third straight loss, the Eagles (6-7) were held to just 29 percent from the field as Amourie Porter (14 points) was their lone double-digit scorer. Marissa Gasaway contributed seven points and a game-high nine boards. Winthrop committed 32 turnovers, which Tennessee converted into 49 points.

No. 17 North Carolina 69, Miami 60

Maria Gakdeng and Alyssa Ustby posted double-doubles as the Tar Heels built a double-digit lead early in the second period and kept the Hurricanes at arm’s length in an Atlantic Coast Conference win in Coral Gables, Fla.

Gakdeng scored nine of her 21 points in the first quarter and Ustby notched seven of her 19 in the second for North Carolina (13-2, 1-1 ACC). Ustby added 13 rebounds, four assists and four steals, and Gakdeng contributed 12 boards. Indya Nivar chipped in 11 points.

Haley Cavinder collected 19 points, 11 rebounds and five assists for Miami (11-2, 1-1), which outshot the Tar Heels 40.4 percent to 39.1 percent but was dominated 40-20 in paint points. Jasmyne Roberts also scored 19 points for the Hurricanes.

No. 20 Alabama 93, Jacksonville 46

Aaliyah Nye poured in 30 points on 9-of-12 shooting from the floor, including a scorching 8-for-10 from 3-point range, as the Crimson Tide throttled the Dolphins in Tuscaloosa, Ala.

In its final tune-up before opening Southeastern Conference play on Thursday against visiting Florida, Alabama (13-1) only led by two after the first quarter but outscored Jacksonville 32-11 in the second quarter.

Three other Crismon Tide players — Eris Lester (14 points, eight rebounds), Zaay Green (13 points) and Sarah Ashlee Barker (12 points) — scored in double figures as the team shot 54.2 percent from the field and a red-hot 53.8 percent from beyond the arc. For the Jaguars (6-6), Saniyah Craig scored a team-high 11 points as the visitors struggled from the field, shooting just 29.5 percent.

No. 22 North Carolina State 83, Clemson 79

Zoe Brooks finished with 18 points, five assists, four rebounds, three steals and two blocks as the Wolfpack survived a test from the Tigers in an Atlantic Coast Conference victory in Raleigh, N.C.

Madison Hayes contributed 19 points and nine rebounds, Aziaha James added 15 points and seven boards and Saniya Rivers scored 14 as NC State (10-3, 2-0) extended its winning streak to six. The Wolfpack (45.3 percent from the field) struggled from 3-point range (29.2 percent), but hit 10 more free throws than Clemson.

In a losing effort, Mia Moore notched a game-high 23 points and Hannah Kohn scored 18 on six 3-pointers for the Tigers (8-5, 1-1), who shot better from 3-point range (48.4 percent) than the field (45.2 percent). Loyal McQueen chipped in with 10 points, nine assists and six rebounds.

No. 24 Iowa 84, Purdue 63

The Hawkeyes built a 15-point lead early in the second quarter and fended off a pair of comeback attempts from the Boilermakers in a Big Ten matchup in Iowa City.

Addison O’Grady led Iowa (11-2, 1-1 Big Ten) with 12 points, and five players added nine. Among them, Syndey Affolter also contributed seven rebounds, six assists and four steals.

Destini Lombard finished with 12 points to lead Purdue (7-6, 0-2), which trimmed its deficit to five midway through the second quarter on Lombard’s 3-pointer. Iowa then scored 14 of the next 16 points, with Affolter netting five of those points.
