WNCAAB: Women’s Top 25 roundup: No. 24 West Virginia downs TCU

JJ Quinerly and Jordan Harrison scored 14 points apiece and No. 24 West Virginia snapped a season-worst three-game losing streak by defeating visiting TCU 57-49 on Saturday in Morgantown, W.Va.

Madison Conner posted 18 points and Sedona Prince scored 15 points for TCU (19-10, 6-12 Big 12), which had a four-game winning streak snapped. The Horned Frogs’ previous loss also came against West Virginia, which posted a 77-52 rout of host TCU on Feb. 13.

West Virginia (23-6, 12-6) built a 37-17 halftime lead. But when TCU posted the first eight points of the fourth quarter, the gap was down to 48-38. It took the Mountaineers nearly six minutes to post their first points of the fourth quarter. TCU shot 3-for-14 on 3-pointers.

No. 3 Texas 71, BYU 46

At Austin, Texas, Madison Booker pumped in 20 points in a victory, but the Longhorns finished second in the Big 12 despite winning nine of their last 10 games.

Aaliyah Moore provided 16 points and eight rebounds, and Taylor Jones and Deyona Gaston each scored 13 points for the Longhorns (27-4, 14-4 Big 12). The Longhorns suffered a one-point loss Wednesday at first-place Oklahoma in an outcome that ultimately decided the regular-season title.

Lauren Gustin had 20 points and Kailey Woolston provided 13 points for BYU (16-15, 6-12), which has lost four of five games.

No. 4 Sanford 76, Oregon 56

At Eugene, Ore, Cameron Brink’s 18 points and Kiki Iriafen’s 16 points paced the Cardinal in a matchup of the Pac-12 Conference’s regular-season champion and last-place team.

The Cardinal (26-4, 15-3 Pac-12) have won three consecutive games despite attempting only six free throws. Hannah Jump had 12 points and Brooke Demetre posted 11 points off the bench.

Chance Gray had 18 points for Oregon (11-20, 2-16), which dropped its 13th straight game. Gray connected on four of the Ducks’ five 3-point baskets.

No. 5 Southern Cal 70, Arizona State 55

At Tempe, Ariz., JuJu Watkins poured in 26 points and the Trojans were in control most of the way.

Rayah Marshall added 15 points and 15 rebounds for Southern Cal (23-5, 13-5 Pac-12), which has won two straight and nine of its last 10. Watkins shot 10-for-22 from the field.

Jalyn Brown’s 17 points and Trayanna Crisp’s 16 points led Arizona State (11-19, 3-15), which shot 32.8 percent from the field. The Sun Devils trailed 39-26 at halftime.

No. 8 UCLA 61, Arizona 41

At Tucson, Ariz., Londynn Jones scored 16 points as the Bruins overcame 30 turnovers to win their fifth game in a row.

Lauren Betts and Gabriela Jaquez both had 11 points for the Bruins (24-5, 13-5 Pac-12), who built a 33-18 halftime lead. UCLA connected on 57.5 percent of its shots.

Helena Pueyo had 16 points for Arizona (16-14, 8-10), but no other team member had more than six. The Wildcats checked in at 28.3 percent from the field, including 1-for-12 from 3-point range.

No. 10 Connecticut 65, Providence 42

At Providence, R.I., Paige Bueckers scored 17 points and the Huskies completed a perfect Big East Conference regular season.

Aaliyah Edwards added 13 points and KK Arnold had 12 for Connecticut (26-5, 18-0 Big East), which has a six-game winning streak since losing to top-ranked South Carolina. Each of the victories in the Huskies’ latest streak has come by 20 or more points.

The Huskies were just 5-for-23 on 3-pointers.

Marta Morales Romero came off the bench to score 10 points for Providence (12-19, 6-12), which managed just 12 points in the second and third quarters combined. The Friars, who committed 18 turnovers, outscored Connecticut 17-8 in the fourth quarter.

No. 11 Oregon State 79, Cal 58

At Corvallis, Ore, Timea Gardiner poured in 19 points to help the Beavers (23-6, 12-6 Pac-12) snap a two-game losing streak.

Raegan Beers added 14 points and Donovyn Hunter posted 13 points for Oregon State, which shot 54.4 percent from the floor. The Beavers held a 40-29 rebounding advantage, with Gardiner pulling in eight boards.

Marta Suarez had 14 points and Leilani McIntosh added 13 points for Cal (17-13, 7-11), which shot 32.2 percent from the field.

Washington State 72, No. 13 Colorado 63

At Boulder, Colo., Eleonora Villa racked up 20 points as the Cougars picked up the road upset against the skidding Buffaloes.

Astera Tuhina added 14 points for the Cougars (18-13, 7-11 Pac-12), who were efficient by making 8 of 17 3-pointers.

The Buffaloes (21-8, 11-7), who’ve lost five of their last six games, were undone by shooting 36.2 percent from the field and committing 11 turnovers.

Jaylyn Sherrod’s 18 points led Colorado, but she shot 3-for-16 from the field to go with 11-for-12 on free throws. Aaronette Vonleh’s 15 points and Frida Formann’s 10 points kept the Buffaloes within range.

No. 15 Kansas State 73, Texas Tech 49

At Lubbock, Texas, Serena Sundell and Gabby Gregory both scored 13 points as the Wildcats cruised.

The Wildcats (24-6, 13-5 Big 12) led 36-17 at halftime. Ayoka Lee had 11 points and Brylee Glenn added 10 points. Kansas State benefitted from 18 Texas Tech turnovers.

Bailey Maupin had 17 points and Jasmine Shavers added 14 for the Red Raiders (16-15, 5-13), who’ve lost nine consecutive games.

Washington 62, No. 18 Utah 47

At Salt Lake City, Lauren Schwartz scored 18 points, Sayvia Sellers had 13 and Dalayah Daniels added 12 points as the visiting Huskies won for the fourth time in their last five games.

The Huskies (16-13, 6-12 Pac-12) rode a big second half, outscoring Utah 35-26 after the break. Washington shot 50.9 percent from the field for the game compared to the Utes’ 31.5. The Huskies had 18 assists on 27 baskets.

Matyson Wilke scored 17 points for Utah (21-9, 11-7).

Kansas 83, No. 20 Oklahoma 74

S’mya Nichols scored a game-high 29 points and Holly Kersgieter tallied 25 as the host Jayhawks knocked off the Sooners.

The Jayhawks (18-11, 11-7 Big 12) have now won three in a row and eight of their last nine.

Payton Verhulst led the Sooners (21-8, 15-3) with 22 points, but the Sooners shot just 5-for-22 from the 3-point line.

No. 24 UNLV 100, San Diego State 41

At Las Vegas, Desi-Rae Young produced 21 points with 9-for-10 shooting from the field in a blowout for the Rebels, who’ve won 11 in a row.

Ashley Scoggin had 17 points, and Alyssa Durazo-Frescas, Amarachi Kimpson and Nneka Obiazor all had 12 points for the Rebels (26-2, 16-1 Mountain West), who shot 61.3 percent from the floor.

UNLV led 28-7 after the first quarter and scored at least 22 points in each of the final three quarters.

Adryana Quezada scored 14 points for San Diego State (18-12, 9-8), which lost its second game in a row following a stretch of four wins in five games.
