Vanderbilt’s Mikayla Blakes added to her record-setting season by scoring 55 points, the most in women’s Division I basketball by a freshman, in the Commodores’ 98-88 overtime win against Auburn on Sunday.
The 5-foot-8 guard raised her scoring average to 23.0 points per game by going 15-for-28 from the floor and 23-for-24 from the free-throw line. She added five rebounds, five assists and three steals, although she also had six turnovers.
On Jan. 30, Blakes netted 53 points, at the time the most among true freshmen, in Vanderbilt’s 99-86 victory against Florida. Her total on Sunday pushed her past Elena Delle Donne, who scored 54 points in a game in 2010 as a redshirt freshman for Delaware.
Vanderbilt improved to 19-7 overall and 6-6 in Southeastern Conference play.
