WNBA: Liberty G Sabrina Ionescu underwent thumb surgery

Three-time All-Star guard Sabrina Ionescu of the New York Liberty underwent thumb surgery to repair a torn thumb ligament in her shooting hand.

Ionescu posted the news to Instagram on Friday, which was also her 27th birthday.

Ionescu is expected to resume on-court activity in four weeks, ESPN reported Sunday night.

Ionescu suffered the injury to her ulnar collateral ligament in Game 4 of the WNBA Finals in October. Ionescu led the Liberty to the WNBA title in five games over the Minnesota Lynx.

Ionescu, the former No. 1 overall pick of the Liberty in 2020, averaged 18.2 points, 6.2 assists and 4.4 rebounds in 38 regular season starts this past season. She averaged 16.9 points in 11 postseason games.

She has career averages of 16.3 points, 6.0 assists and 5.6 rebounds.
