Jake Bates kicked five field goals, the last a 42-yarder on the final play to lift the host Michigan Panthers past the winless Arlington Renegades 28-27 on Sunday in Detroit.

The Renegades (0-6) had taken a 27-25 lead on Jonathan Garibay’s 48-yard field goal with 54 seconds left in regulation. On the ensuing kickoff, Michigan’s Marcus Simms recovered his own fumble at the 9 and returned it to the Arlington 46, with a face-mask penalty on Steven Jones Jr. moving the ball to the 31.

After two plays to run down the clock and a 5-yard penalty on Arlington for too many men on the field, Bates booted the game winner to add to kicks of 43, 60, 29 and 49 yards for Michigan (4-2).

Panthers quarterback Danny Etling was 16-of-28 passing for 202 yards, including a 9-yard touchdown to Siaosi Mariner. Renegades QB Luis Perez was 24-of-37 passing for 180 yards, including a 19-yard scoring toss to Sal Cannella.
