Amanda Nunes and Julianna Pena continued their beef after the former announced her retirement at UFC 289 in Vancouver, British Columbia.
Pena appeared unpleased with Saturday’s turn of events and claimed over Twitter that she had scared Nunes into retirement.
The two initially were expected to headline UFC 289 before a rib injury sidelined Pena. Nunes, who is the defending UFC bantamweight and featherweight champion, instead recorded a unanimous decision over fill-in opponent Irene Aldana.
“I was supposed to beat her tonight again,” Nunes said, per ESPN, in response to Pena’s social media comment. “If it was Julianna Pena tonight, I wouldn’t retire. I wanted to fight somebody I never fought before and then retire.”
Pena defeated Nunes via submission at UFC 269 on Dec. 11, 2021 before the latter responded less than eight months later with a unanimous decision victory at UFC 277.
Nunes, 35, finished with a 23-5 record.
Pena, 33, is 11-5 as a professional.
