Keegan Bradley shot a 6-under 64 on Saturday and holds a one-shot lead over Chez Reavie after three rounds of the Travelers Championship in Cromwell, Conn.
Bradley, who shared the 36-hole lead with Denny McCarthy, carded six birdies during a bogey-free round to stand at 21-under 189, the lowest 54-hole score of his career and one stroke shy of the all-time PGA Tour record.
“It was just really solid,” Bradley said of his round. “Pretty boring honestly until the very end there. … I’m proud of the way I played. I’ve wanted to win this tournament forever, so the feeling of wanting to push and win is something I need to fight against and just let myself go out and play.”
Reavie had eight birdies and one bogey while posting a 63 to put heat on Bradley. He also posted the best 54-hole score of his career (190).
“I didn’t look at a leaderboard to be honest with you,” Reavie said. “I saw it when we got — three or four holes into the round I saw some of the scores. It’s kind of nice knowing there are some birdies out there if you hit good shots. That was my goal, just to do that.”
Patrick Cantlay recorded a 9-under 61 to move within five shots of Bradley. He made nine birdies, including four straight on Nos. 12-15, to enter the final round at 16 under.
McCarthy shot even-par 70 to fall six shots off the pace. He had four birdies and four bogeys. He made back-to-back bogeys on Nos. 7-8.
Rickie Fowler and Australia’s Adam Scott are also tied with McCarthy for fourth place.
Fowler shot a blistering 60 and had a chance to hit 59 before a par on No. 9, his final hole of the day. Fowler eagled the par-5 sixth and made eight birdies. He had 59 on his mind.
“Making the turn,” Fowler said about the possibility. “After birdieing 18 I knew I could potentially get six on the front, and especially after birdieing 1 and 2, my 10th and 11th. You know, 7-under through 11 is a pretty good spot to be in.”
Scott had six birdies and one bogey while shooting 65.
Justin Thomas (62) and Scottie Scheffler (63) had strong rounds to move up to a tie for seventh place at 14 under. Also in the tie are Alex Smalley (64), Brian Harman (64) and Australia’s Min Woo Lee (65).
Defending champion Xander Schauffele (T18) has never successfully defended a title in five previous attempts on Tour. He stands at 11 under.
