PROP PICKS
–Sam Burns to Beat Viktor Hovland (-140 at DraftKings): Yes, Hovland won the 2018 U.S. Amateur and was the low amateur the following year at the U.S. Open at Pebble Beach. He also finished T58 here during a disappointing 2024 season, and is coming off a missed cut in Dubai as Hovland continues to work through yet another swing change. Burns’ superb iron play should bode well at Pebble, where he finished 10th last year.
–Wyndham Clark Top 30 Finish (+100 at BetRivers): The defending champ is a bit under the radar despite still being ranked seventh in the world. He did miss the cut at The American Express after a T15 at The Sentry, so Clark’s season is really just getting started. Remember, he only needs to beat 50 players in the limited field for this prop to pay.
–Ludvig Aberg Top Nordic Finisher (-105 at DraftKings): Aberg got off to a blistering start at Torrey Pines before very difficult conditions and an illness led to a poor weekend. He’s against Hovland (+230) and Rasmus Hojgaard (+275) in this prop. We’re certainly not sleeping on Hojgaard, who finished solo second at the DP World Tour Championship to close out 2024 and T14 in Dubai to kick off ’25. But we also believe Aberg is on the verge of true superstardom.
2025 Prop Pick Record: 4-5-0
BEST BETS
–Scottie Scheffler (+400 at DraftKings) is the overwhelming pre-tournament favorite despite teeing it up this week for the first time since winning the Hero World Challenge in early December. He won four signature events last year. Scheffler leads the field with 10 percent of all outright winner bets and 11 percent of the money backing him this week.
–Rory McIlroy (+1100) is coming off a solid showing in Dubai, but he missed the cut here in 2018 and tied for 66th last year. He is not among the top 10 players in the field in terms of money or total bets backing him to win.
–Justin Thomas (+1400) is up to 14th in the world following his runner-up at the AmEx. His recent form has led to Thomas being third in the field with 9 percent of the money backing him to win for the first time since the 2022 PGA Championship.
–Collin Morikawa (+1400) finished second at The Sentry in his lone start of the year thus far. He has also drawn 9 percent of the total money.
–Ludvig Aberg (+1800) tied for fifth at The Sentry and was the first-round leader with a 63 last week before settling for a T4 while battling an illness over the weekend.
–Patrick Cantlay (+1800) hasn’t won a stroke play event in three years, but that hasn’t stopped the public from backing him with 10 percent of all money wagered on the winner. He is coming off a T5 at The AmEx and finished T11 here last year.
NOTES
–The no-cut tournament features a $20 million prize pool and increased FedEx Cup points. After playing alongside amateurs on each of the courses over the first two rounds, all 80 professionals only will play on the weekend at Pebble Beach.
–No. 77 Jordan Spieth will also compete for the first time since August. He has been recovering from back surgery and is in the field on a sponsor exemption along with Rickie Fowler, Gary Woodland and Harry Hall. Woodland won the 2019 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach.
–No. 2 Xander Schauffele remains sidelined by a rib injury the forced him to withdraw from the previous two events as well. The only other eligible player not in the field is No. 58 Alex Noren.
–Clark shot a course record 60 in the third round en route to winning the event shortened to 54 holes last year due to weather. The last player to successfully defend at Pebble Beach was Dustin Johnson in 2010.
