United States women’s national team forward Trinity Rodman exited the field area in a wheelchair during the Washington Spirit’s 3-0 loss to the Kansas City Current on Friday, which her agent attributed to an “intense back spasm.”

That’s what Mike Senkowski told The Washington Post Saturday about Rodman, adding her back remained bothersome the morning after.

“Still in a [lot] of pain, but I’m hopeful [she] avoided a very serious injury,” Senkowski told The Post.

Rodman used her body to shield the ball away from Current forward Temwa Chawinga in the 75th minute of the NWSL match in Kansas City, Mo. Chawinga’s knee appeared to make contact with the lower back of Rodman, who does have a history of back issues.

Rodman, 22, initially hunched over with her hands on her hips before she collapsed to her knees. She received treatment and ultimately walked off the field before opting to sit down in a wheelchair to be taken to the locker room.

Spirit head coach Jonatan Giraldez confirmed a back injury for Rodman but noted he had “no information” to add.

Courtney Brown entered the match in the 78th minute in place of Rodman, who has collected eight goals and six assists in 20 games this season for the Spirit (14-5-2, 44 points).

Netting goals for the Current (12-3-6, 42 points) were Nichelle Prince, Lo’eau LaBonta and Chawinga, the latter of whom scored her 16th goal to increase her lead in the NWSL’s Golden Boot race.
