The Seattle Reign have loaned top-notch defender Sofia Huerta to Olympique Lyonnais of the Premiere Ligue in France through June 2025, the team announced Thursday.
The team didn’t release the loan amount it received for the 31-year-old Huerta, who was a member of the United States’ Women’s World Cup team in 2023. Huerta pushed for the opportunity to play overseas.
Huerta has scored 37 goals and a league-record 31 assists in 188 NSWL matches since entering the league in 2015. She has two goals in 19 matches this season, playing every minute for Seattle.
“I’m so grateful for the Reign, the coaching staff and my teammates for supporting me in this personal decision to pursue an opportunity to compete overseas,” Huerta said in a news release. “I have so much confidence in this group to continue working towards the goals we set at the start of the season and can’t wait to cheer on the team down the stretch.”
Huerta will immediately join Olympique Lyonnais. Her contract with Seattle runs through the 2027 season.
“In the case of Sofia Huerta’s loan to Olympique Lyonnais, this was an opportunity that arose earlier this summer, and Sofia expressed interest in exploring it for both personal and professional reasons,” Seattle Reign FC general manager Lesle Gallimore said.
Huerta has played in 32 matches for the USWNT and has four assists. She was not part of the 2024 Olympic roster. This was her fourth season with Seattle.
