The Chicago Red Stars signed free-agent midfielder Shea Groom to a two-year contract on Wednesday.

Groom, 30, played the past four seasons with the Houston Dash, although she made only one appearance in 2023. She played in 61 matches (50 starts) and collected nine goals with seven assists across all competitions for Houston.

“I’m so excited to join the Red Stars and represent the city of Chicago,” Groom, a native of Liberty, Mo., said in a press release. “I’m a Midwest girl at heart and I know this club is destined to do great things.”

Groom has played for FC Kansas City (2015-17), Sky Blue FC (2018), Reign FC (2019) and Houston (2020-23), with 33 goals and 20 assists in 159 matches (134 starts) across all matches.

“She is a proven player, and her experience will help us succeed on the pitch and help us develop our younger players,” Red Stars president Karen Leetzow said. “They will be competing with her every day at training and learning what it takes to a top player in this league.”

FC Kansas City selected Groom 12th overall in the 2015 draft out of Texas A&M. Kansas City won the league championship that season. She was selected to the league’s Best XI second team in 2016.
