San Jose Sharks defenseman Matt Benning underwent hip surgery and will miss the rest of the season, the team announced Thursday.

Benning, 29, has two assists in 14 games this season. He hasn’t played since a 6-5 Sharks loss to the host New York Rangers on Dec. 3.

The team expects Benning, who faces approximately five months of recovery time, to be ready for training camp next season.

Benning signed a four-year, $5 million deal with the Sharks in July 2022. In 457 games with the Edmonton Oilers (2016-20), Nashville Predators (2020-22) and Sharks, Benning has 17 goals and 102 points.
