Buffalo Sabres forward Tage Thompson is expected to miss “significant time” after sustaining an upper-body injury in Tuesday’s game against the Boston Bruins, head coach Don Granato announced.

Thompson initially sustained a lower-body injury during the first period after being cut by the skate of Bruins defenseman Charlie McAvoy. Thompson returned in the second period before he suffered an upper-body injury when he blocked a shot from McAvoy.

“Tage is going to miss some time here,” Granato said after his team’s 5-2 loss on Tuesday. “Probably significant time, unfortunately. He fought through the first injury but couldn’t fight through the second one. Credit to him to battle, but it’s unfortunate.”

Thompson, 26, has 12 points (six goals, six assists) in 16 games this season. He recorded career-high totals in goals (47), assists (47) and points (94) in 78 games in 2022-23.

Thompson has totaled 200 points (106 goals, 94 assists) in 276 career games with the St. Louis Blues and Sabres. He was selected by the Blues with the 26th overall pick of the 2016 NHL Draft before being traded to Buffalo in a package deal for Ryan O’Reilly.
