Reigning Norris Trophy winner Adam Fox signed a seven-year contract extension with the New York Rangers on Monday.

Multiple reports said the extension carries an average annual value of $9.5 million.

The 23-year-old American defenseman is in his third season and has averaged a point per game so far in 2021-22 — two goals and seven assists over nine games. In 55 games last season, Fox posted five goals and 42 assists while averaging 24:42 of ice time per game and contributing to both New York’s power-play and penalty-kill units.

Fox beat out Colorado’s Cale Makar and Tampa Bay’s Victor Hedman to win the Norris, given to the best all-around defenseman in the league.

“We are thrilled that we have agreed to terms with Adam on a contract extension and that he will continue to play for the team he grew up cheering for,” Rangers president and general manager Chris Drury said. “In just over two seasons, Adam has consistently shown why he is a cornerstone for our organization and one of the best players in the NHL. It has been a privilege for us, and our fans, to watch Adam showcase his ability on a nightly basis, and we are glad to have that opportunity for seven more years.”

The Calgary Flames selected Fox in the third round of the 2016 NHL Draft. He was traded to the Carolina Hurricanes and then to the Rangers before making his NHL debut in 2019.
