The Pittsburgh Penguins and forward Jeff Carter reached agreement Wednesday on a two-year extension worth $6.25 million.

The deal begins next season and runs through the 2023-24 campaign, carrying an average annual value of $3.125 million.

“Jeff’s experience and versatility have made him a valuable addition to our team,” said Penguins general manager Ron Hextall. “In addition to his on-ice contributions, his team-first attitude has made him a leader inside our locker room and we are happy to have him under contract for two more years.”

Carter, 37, is in his second season in Pittsburgh. He’s sixth on the Penguins with 26 points (12 goals, 14 assists) in 36 games.

The former first-round pick (No. 11 overall) of the Philadelphia Flyers and two-time Stanley Cup winner has 411 goals and 377 assists in this his 17th season.

The Penguins acquired Carter from the Los Angeles Kings last April. He won titles with the Kings in 2012 and 2014.
