Darnell Nurse scored 1:20 into overtime and the visiting Edmonton Oilers tied a franchise record with their ninth consecutive victory, edging the Detroit Red Wings 3-2 on Thursday night.

Nurse ripped a shot from the left circle past Alex Lyon for his sixth goal of the season.

Zach Hyman scored his team-leading 26th goal and added an assist while Connor McDavid supplied his 16th goal of the season for the Oilers.

Andrew Copp netted his sixth of the season for Detroit. Olli Maatta sent the game into overtime by scoring his second goal with less than four minutes left in regulation.

Calvin Pickard made 15 saves for Edmonton. Lyon stopped 44 shots, but the Red Wings saw their three-game winning streak end.

Detroit came up empty in three power-play opportunities. Edmonton didn’t score on two power plays.

Lyon made 16 saves in the first period to keep the game scoreless. Detroit’s Patrick Kane banged a shot off the crossbar early in the second period.

Edmonton outshot the Red Wings 11-5 in the second but still couldn’t beat Lyon.

Copp broke the deadlock at 3:34 of the third. He took a wrist shot that whistled through traffic and past Pickard.

McDavid tied it at 9:12. He collected a loose puck near the Red Wings’ blue line and beat Lyon. Hyman was credited with an assist.

Hyman’s goal with six minutes left gave Edmonton a 2-1 lead. He took a shot that went through defenseman Ben Chiarot’s legs and into the net. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Mattias Ekholm picked up the assists.

Detroit knotted the score with 3:57 remaining.

Lucas Raymond fired the puck from the left boards toward the net. Pickard lost sight of the puck as it rested near the goal line. Maatta pounced on it and tapped the puck into the net. Dylan Larkin was credited with the secondary assist.

The Oilers can set the franchise record for consecutive victories at Montreal on Saturday. Edmonton previously had nine-game winning streaks in the 2001-02 and 2022-23 seasons.
