NHL: NHL roundup: Avs’ Mikko Rantanen collects hat trick vs. Pens

Mikko Rantanen scored a hat trick and had two assists for the Colorado Avalanche in a 6-2 win against the host Pittsburgh Penguins on Tuesday.

Nathan MacKinnon had a goal and four assists and Scott Wedgewood made 25 saves for the Avalanche, who have won three straight games and four of their past five.

Cody Glass and Michael Bunting scored for the Penguins, who have lost two of their past three games after a four-game winning streak. Tristan Jarry made 21 saves.

With Jarry pulled for an extra attacker, Rantanen completed his hat trick from the right circle into an empty net at 15:08 of the third period.

Panthers 2, Kraken 1 (SO)

Aleksander Barkov scored in regulation and again in a shootout as Florida opened a five-game trip by winning in Seattle.

Barkov and Sam Reinhart tallied in the shootout for the Panthers while Seattle’s Eeli Tolvanen and Oliver Bjorkstrand had their attempts stopped by Sergei Bobrovsky. Bobrovsky made 17 saves as the defending Stanley Cup champion Panthers extended their points streak to seven games (6-0-1).

Chandler Stephenson scored in regulation for Seattle, and Joey Daccord stopped 32 of 33 shots. Daccord returned after missing the Kraken’s 7-5 road victory over the New York Rangers on Sunday because of an illness.

Maple Leafs 2, Devils 1 (OT)

Auston Matthews scored 2:51 into overtime to fuel Toronto to its ninth straight road victory over New Jersey in Newark, N.J.

Matthews fended off Devils defenseman Brett Pesce on a partial breakaway and tucked the puck past Jacob Markstrom. The goal was Matthews’ ninth of the season and fourth in his past five games. Pontus Holmberg also scored for the Maple Leafs, and Anthony Stolarz made 38 saves for the win.

Ondrej Palat scored and Markstrom turned aside 14 shots for New Jersey, which received a scare late in the second when star Jack Hughes was leveled by Toronto’s Max Pacioretty. Hughes remained in the game, however.

Blues 4, Canucks 3 (OT)

Dylan Holloway scored 1:40 into overtime to give St. Louis a win at Vancouver, spoiling the season debut of Canucks goalie Thatcher Demko (21 saves).

Holloway also had an assist, giving him six goals and five assists over a seven-game points streak. Robert Thomas had a goal and two assists for St. Louis. Jordan Kyrou and Zack Bolduc scored the Blues’ other goals, and Joel Hofer stopped 22 shots.

Elias Pettersson had a goal and an assist for the Canucks, and Jake DeBrusk and Dakota Joshua also scored. Conor Garland and Brock Boeser each had two assists.

Wild 5, Utah Hockey Club 4 (SO)

Matt Boldy scored the only goal of a shootout to give Minnesota a win over Utah in Salt Lake City.

Marcus Johansson had a goal and two assists and Marat Khusnutdinov, Kirill Kaprizov and Marco Rossi also scored for Minnesota. Filip Gustavsson stopped 21 shots for the victory.

It was the first shootout ever for Utah since the team made the move from Arizona. The franchise is in its first season in Salt Lake City. Clayton Keller scored twice and Kevin Stenlund and defenseman Juuso Valimaki got the other goals for Utah.

Oilers 2, Lightning 1

Leon Draisaitl notched a goal and an assist, Connor McDavid added to his career-long success against Tampa Bay and host Edmonton ran its winning streak to three games.

Draisaitl scored a fluky goal in the second period that proved to be the game-winner as the Oilers won for the fourth straight time at home. In his 13th career game against Tampa Bay, McDavid hit the net for the 12th time. Oilers goaltender Stuart Skinner made 21 saves.

Tampa Bay’s Jake Guentzel scored in his fourth consecutive game, while Andrei Vasilevskiy stopped 23 shots as the Lightning slipped to 1-1-0 on their four-game road trip.

Kings 3, Islanders 1

Adrian Kempe, Kevin Fiala and Mikey Anderson scored for Los Angeles, which continued surging with a win in Elmont, N.Y.

Kempe also had an assist and Darcy Kuemper made 19 saves for the Kings, who extended the NHL’s longest active winning streak to six games.

Anders Lee scored in the second for the Islanders, whose two-game winning streak ended. Ilya Sorokin recorded 27 saves.

Hurricanes 3, Sharks 2

Jalen Chatfield scored the go-ahead goal with 2:39 remaining to help Carolina rally past San Jose in Raleigh, N.C.

Defensemen Shayne Gostisbehere and Brent Burns also scored for the Hurricanes, who trailed 2-1 entering the third period. Burns evened the score at 4:11 in the third on his second goal of the season before Chatfield followed with his third goal of the campaign.

Pyotr Kochetkov made 21 saves as Carolina won for only the second time in its past six games (2-4-0). Luke Kunin scored both goals for the Sharks in their third straight loss. Vitek Vanecek stopped 25 shots.

Flyers 5, Blue Jackets 3

Travis Konecny scored twice while Morgan Frost had a goal and an assist as Philadelphia snapped a three-game losing streak with a win at Columbus.

Owen Tippett scored for the fifth time in five games, Noah Cates also found the back of the net and star rookie Matvei Michkov added two assists for the Flyers. Samuel Ersson earned the win after making 15 saves.

Zach Werenski, Sean Monahan and Kent Johnson scored for the Blue Jackets, who managed just 18 shots on goal while losing for the fourth time in five games. The result also ended Columbus’ 4-0-1 run at home.

Flames 4, Predators 3

Jonathan Huberdeau and Kevin Rooney each collected a goal and an assist to lead visiting Calgary to a comeback victory over Nashville.

Nazem Kadri and Brayden Pachal also scored for the Flames, who went into the clash with one win in seven games (1-4-2) and snapped an eight-game road winless stretch (0-5-3). Calgary goaltender Dan Vladar made 17 saves.

Jonathan Marchessault scored twice and Tommy Novak tallied once for the Predators, who sit at the bottom of the league standings and have lost eight consecutive games (0-5-3). Filip Forsberg collected two assists and Juuse Saros stopped 24 shots while his team surrendered a trio of leads.

Jets 8, Bruins 1

Three-point nights from Mark Scheifele and Kyle Connor helped Winnipeg cruise to a win over visiting Boston.

Scheifele (two goals, one assist) scored in each of the first two periods for his 46th career multi-goal game, tying Ilya Kovalchuk for the most in team history. The Jets built a 3-0 lead before rattling off a five-goal third, including three goals in 7:19 and two in a later 10-second span. Connor had two assists and opened the late spurt with a goal.

Connor Hellebuyck earned his league-leading 18th victory with 23 saves. David Pastrnak scored and Jeremy Swayman (27 saves) took the loss for Boston, which had won four straight.
