Jordan Martinook had a goal and an assist as the visiting Carolina Hurricanes edged the Detroit Red Wings 2-1 on Tuesday night.

Jordan Staal had the other Carolina goal, while Frederik Andersen made 24 saves as the Hurricanes won for the third time in four games.

Elmer Soderblom scored the lone goal for Detroit, which has lost three straight following a 9-1-1 stretch. Alex Lyon made 28 saves.

Detroit was awarded the first power play when Andrei Svechnikov was called for boarding. Carolina also received a first-period power play when Patrick Kane was penalized for hooking.

The Hurricanes broke through with just over a minute left in the opening period. Martinook scored on a backhander off a feed from Jalen Chatfield. The latter won a puck battle along the boards and delivered the puck to Martinook, who beat Lyon on the glove side.

Staal made it 2-0 at 1:29 of the second period. Lyon misplayed the puck from behind his net, and Staal collected it and scored on a wraparound before Lyon could recover. Martinook and Shayne Gostisbehere were credited with assists.

The Red Wings had a brief power play when Eric Robinson was penalized for crosschecking. That was offset seven seconds later when Lucas Raymond went to the box for hooking.

Carolina outshot Detroit 13-8 in the middle period, which ended with the Hurricanes maintaining their two-goal advantage.

Soderblom ended the Hurricanes’ shutout bid with 9:55 remaining. He skated in from center ice, brought the puck along the left side, then cut to the net and beat Andersen on the short side.

The Hurricanes killed off a Svechnikov hooking penalty a short time later.

The Hurricanes were awarded a penalty shot with 4:38 remaining when Taylor Hall was hooked by Erik Gustafsson on a breakaway. Lyon made the save to keep his team within a goal.

This was the first of three meetings between the clubs. Carolina will host the Red Wings on March 14 before returning to Detroit on April 4.
