Seth Jarvis began the scoring with a short-handed goal and Pyotr Kochetkov stopped 23 shots as the Carolina Hurricanes beat the Tampa Bay Lightning 4-1 on Tuesday night in Raleigh, N.C.

Jordan Martinook, Jack Roslovic and Sean Walker also scored as the Hurricanes notched their fifth consecutive victory.

Gage Goncalves broke up Kochetkov’s shutout bid 4:38 into the third period. Andrei Vasilevskiy made 27 saves for the Lightning, who dropped their second game in a row despite an overall stretch with 10 victories in 13 games.

The Lightning committed three third-period penalties, so that diminished their chances at gaining much momentum for a comeback.

The Hurricanes, who lost two previous matchups with Tampa Bay this season, went 0-for-5 on power plays, but they still produced on special teams.

That’s because Jarvis scored 4:29 into the game with teammate Jackson Blake in the penalty box. After receiving the puck from Sebatian Aho’s pass, Jarvis made a splendid individual move down the left side for his 26th goal of the season. His shot sent the puck in the upper far corner of the net.

Martinook and Roslovic scored with 7:04 and 45 seconds remaining in the second period. Roslovic, in his first season with Carolina, reached the 20-goal mark.

It was the second game in a row that the Hurricanes didn’t allow a goal until the third period. Tampa Bay had 10 shots in the first period, but only six in the second. It was Carolina’s second strong outing in two games since the trade deadline.

After Goncalves scored by sending the puck through traffic in front of the net, Carolina restored its three-goal advantage less than two minutes later. The Hurricanes won an offensive zone faceoff, and it led to Walker’s wrister resulting in his third goal of the season.

The Hurricanes played without injured forward Andrei Svechnikov and ailing defenseman Dmitry Orlov.
