Jack Eichel scored on a breakaway at 3:01 of overtime, his 200th career NHL goal, as the Vegas Golden Knights rallied to defeat the host Seattle Kraken 5-4 Tuesday night.
Jonathan Marchessault tallied twice for the Golden Knights, including the tying goal with 16.3 seconds left in regulation and the goalie pulled for an extra attacker.
William Karlsson had a goal and an assist and Pavel Dorofeyev also scored for Vegas. Eichel added two assists, and Adin Hill made 26 saves.
Brandon Tanev gave the Kraken a 3-2 lead at 5:21 of the third period.
Andre Burakovsky, Matty Beniers and Oliver Bjorkstrand also scored for Seattle, which fell nine points behind the defending Stanley Cup champion Golden Knights for the Western Conference’s second and final wild-card berth. Philipp Grubauer stopped 29 of 34 shots.
It was a wild third period, with the Kraken overcoming a 2-1 deficit with three goals in the opening 11:30, only to see Vegas score twice in the final 7:37.
Karlsson pulled the Golden Knights within 4-3 on a slap shot from the top of the right faceoff circle off a pass from Brayden McNabb at 12:23.
Vegas tied it late as Eichel flipped the puck toward the net from the right point. Chandler Stephenson redirected it to a wide open Marchessault on the left wing for a slap shot that beat a sprawling Grubauer.
Alex Pietrangelo’s stretch pass sent Eichel on net in overtime, and Eichel lifted a shot over Grubauer’s glove for the winner.
Trailing 2-1 entering the third period, the Kraken scored three unanswered goals.
The Kraken tied it at 1:55 as Will Borgen’s shot from the right point was tipped by Beniers in the slot and skipped between Hill’s pads.
Tanev tied it after winning a faceoff at center ice that created a three-on-two rush. Tanev skated the puck over the blue line and fed Kailer Yamamoto on the left wing. Yamamoto immediately sent a pass to Pierre-Edouard Bellemare for a one-timer from the top of the right faceoff circle that Tanev tipped into the top near corner of the net.
Bjorkstrand completed the rally by beating Hill on a partial breakaway after taking a stretch pass from Eeli Tolvanen at 11:30 to make it 4-2.
Kraken forward Jordan Eberle, who signed a two-year contract extension on Friday, played in his 1,000th NHL game.
