NHL: Devon Toews’ 3-point night lifts Avalanche past Islanders

Devon Toews had a goal and two assists against his former team, Andre Burakovsky had a goal and an assist, and the Colorado Avalanche beat the New York Islanders 5-3 in Denver on Tuesday night.

Nathan MacKinnon, Gabriel Landeskog and Erik Johnson also scored, Cale Makar and Nazem Kadri had two assists and Darcy Kuemper stopped 28 shots for Colorado.

Jean-Gabriel Pageau had a goal and an assist, Kyle Palmieri and Ryan Pulock also had goals and Zack Parise had two assists for the Islanders. Ilya Sorokin had 39 saves.

MacKinnon got the Avalanche on the board when he scored at 3:23 of the first period. It was his 16th goal of the season and the third straight game he has scored.

Pulock tied it midway through the first period when his wrister from the point deflected off Makar and by Kuemper at 10:03. It was his first of the season.

Colorado went back in front with a goal early in the second period. Burakovsky fed a pass to Toews as he skated down the slot and he beat Sorokin with a screened shot at 3:54. It was his career-high 10th goal of the season.

The Islanders answered when Pageau got the puck near the right circle and beat Kuemper to the opposite side at 4:39. It was his ninth goal of the season.

New York took a 3-2 lead when Palmieri knocked in a rebound for his sixth goal at 12:23.

The Avalanche put 10 shots on goal in the first 3:11 of the third and cashed in on their 11th when Landeskog backhanded the puck off of Sorokin and in to tie it 3-3 at 4:43. It was his 29th of the season.

New York thought it got the go-ahead goal at 11:49 of the third but the initial call of a goal was overturned. Just 59 seconds later, Burakovsky’s shot from the left circle beat Sorokin for his 17th goal of the season.

Sorokin went off for an extra skater and Johnson scored into the empty net at 19:17, his sixth goal of the season.
