New Jersey center Jack Hughes sustained an upper-body injury early in the Devils’ Friday game against the host St. Louis Blues and was ruled out after being unable to stay on the ice when he tried to return.

Hughes, who began the night atop the NHL with 20 points, was driving toward the net at full speed when he appeared to slip and then went awkwardly into the end boards near the midway point of the first period.

The fifth-year veteran came back for his next shift but left after 59 seconds. The team ruled him out early in the third period.

Hughes’ career-best 43 goals and 56 assists in 2022-23 set a Devils record for points in a season.
