Connor Bedard scored the go-ahead goal with 54 seconds remaining and Teuvo Teravainen had a goal and two assists as the host Chicago Blackhawks defeated the New York Islanders 5-3 on Sunday.

Bedard added an assist and Alex Vlasic had two assists to help Chicago avenge a 5-4 road loss to the Islanders on Thursday.

Chicago, which has surrendered eight third-period goals in the past three games, scored twice in the final minute to earn the win. The Blackhawks led 3-2 after two periods but gave up the lead just 47 seconds into the third period when Noah Dobson moved into the low slot and beat Blackhawks goaltender Arvid Soderblom on a wrist shot.

With heavy traffic in front of the net, Bedard put the Blackhawks ahead for good, sliding a shot past Islanders goalie Ilya Sorokin moments after an unsuccessful New York power play. Connor Murphy sealed the result with an empty-net goal with 11 seconds remaining.

Soderblom stopped 30 shots while Sorokin made 18 saves.

Chicago opened the scoring 9:08 into the game as Ilya Mikheyev converted a second-chance opportunity in front of the net off a feed from Teravainen.

New York’s Ryan Pulock netted the equalizer with 1:17 remaining in the first period, burying a slap shot from the right point through traffic following a long rebound.

Taylor Hall answered for the Blackhawks less than a minute later, capitalizing on a slap shot near the goal line with New York unable to clear its defensive zone.

The Islanders tied the game at 2 at 2:25 of the second period when Simon Holmstrom deflected a net-front pass from Pierre Engvall past Soderblom.

Chicago took a 3-2 lead at 15:19 of the second. With the Blackhawks on a 5-on-3 power play, Teravainen beat Sorokin on a one-timer from Bedard’s pass.

Chicago held New York to 0-for-4 on the power play and has killed 25 straight penalties over the past nine games.

Islanders defenseman Scott Mayfield skated in his 500th career game.

Five of Teravainen’s seven goals have come on the man advantage.
