Defenseman Rasmus Sandin signed a five-year, $23 million contract extension with the Washington Capitals.
The Capitals announced the deal on Wednesday, one day before the Sweden native celebrates his 24th birthday.
Sandin has tallied 20 points (three goals, 17 assists) in 52 games this season. He is second on the team in time on ice per game (21:19).
The Maple Leafs selected Sandin with the No. 29 overall pick of the 2018 NHL Draft. The Capitals acquired him in a trade on Feb. 28, 2023, sending defenseman Erik Gustafsson and a first-round pick in the 2023 draft to Toronto.
In 211 career NHL games, Sandin has 83 points (16 goals, 67 assists). He set career highs in games played (71), goals (seven), assists (28) and points (35) in the 2022-23 season.
