Rookie forward Connor Bedard is set to return to the ice from a fractured jaw Thursday night when the Chicago Blackhawks host the Pittsburgh Penguins, according to multiple posts on X by the NHL on the Blackhawks.

The team had reportedly been awaiting final approval from doctors before making a decision about his availability.

Bedard, the No. 1 pick of the 2023 NHL Draft, suffered the injury Jan. 5 when on the receiving end of a big hit from New Jersey Devils defenseman Brendan Smith. He had surgery three days later and was expected to be lost at least six to eight weeks.

The 18-year-old will be wearing a face mask upon his return.

Bedard has been taking part in non-contact portions of practice since Feb. 6.

In his first 39 career games, Bedard had 15 goals and 18 assists. Despite missing more than five weeks of action, he remains tied with Minnesota Wild defenseman Brock Faber for the most points among NHL rookies.

Bedard was named an All-Star but was unable to participate in the game.
