Washington Commanders cornerback Emmanuel Forbes Jr. has a torn UCL in his right thumb and will undergo surgery Friday, according to multiple reports.

The injury occurred in the Commanders’ 37-20 Week 1 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Forbes made four tackles.

How long he will be out was not disclosed. The Washington Post reported that Forbes will miss the Commanders’ home opener against the New York Giants (0-1) on Sunday. The team will know more about Forbes’ recovery time after the surgery. If he is placed on injured reserve, he is required to miss at least four games.

He was a full participant on Wednesday and limited at practice on Thursday. Coach Dan Quinn said Forbes will wear a splint to protect the thumb.

The Commanders selected Forbes with the No. 16 overall pick of the 2023 NFL Draft.

Forbes, 23, made 38 tackles, defended 11 passes and intercepted one pass in 14 games (six starts) in his rookie season.
