The Houston Texans have ruled out quarterback C.J. Stroud (concussion protocol) for Sunday’s game at the Tennessee Titans.

Veteran backup Case Keenum will get the start in his place, multiple outlets reported Saturday night.

Stroud and offensive tackle George Fant (hip/illness) did not travel to Nashville after not practicing this week, the team announced Saturday. Stroud had been listed as doubtful and Fant was questionable.

Houston also added cornerback Steven Nelson (wrist) to the injury report on Saturday and he is questionable to play.

Stroud did not return to the Week 14 game after hitting his head on the turf in the late stages of a 30-6 loss to the New York Jets last Sunday in East Rutherford, N.J. He’s second in the NFL in passing yards (3,631) and owns the fifth-best passer rating (98.7).

Davis Mills replaced Stroud last week and played the final 6:30 against the Jets. He started 26 games over the previous two seasons — although Houston is just 5-20-1 in those games. However, the Texans reportedly are going with the veteran experience of Keenum, who has made 64 NFL starts with six teams and appeared in 78 games with seven teams overall.

Mills and QB3 Keenum divided reps with the first-team offense during the week for the Texans (7-6), who are fighting to remain in playoff contention against the Titans (5-8).
