Houston Texans wide receiver John Metchie III is ready for training camp after missing his 2022 rookie season while battling leukemia.

Texans general manager Nick Caserio confirmed that he has no concerns about the health of Metchie, who was on the practice field Wednesday.

“He’s cleared to participate here in training camp,” Caserio said. “John’s ready to go. He had a little bit of a setback there in the spring (due to a hamstring injury), but he’s cleared, he’s ready to practice, and we’ll take it one day at a time. I’m sure he’s anxious and excited to get back on the field.”

Metchie, 23, announced last July that he had been diagnosed with acute promyelocytic leukemia, mere months after he was selected by the Texans with a second-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft.

He recorded 96 catches for 1,142 yards and eight touchdowns in 2021 before tearing his ACL in Alabama’s 41-24 win over Georgia in the SEC title game. He posted 155 catches for 2,081 yards and 14 TDs in three seasons with the Crimson Tide.
