Pittsburgh Steelers defensive tackle Cameron Heyward returned to practice on Thursday, opening a 21-day window for the team to either activate him to the roster or keep him on injured reserve for the rest of the season.

Heyward has been sidelined since suffering a groin injury in the second quarter of Pittsburgh’s 30-7 loss to the San Francisco 49ers in the season opener Sept. 10.

The three-time All-Pro and six-time Pro Bowl selection is a defensive captain for the Steelers.

Heyward was a first-round draft pick (31st overall) of the Steelers in 2011 out of Ohio State. The Pittsburgh native has played in 184 NFL games (149 starts) and has 78.5 sacks and 614 tackles.
