Dallas Cowboys defensive end Randy Gregory will have surgery on his left knee, ESPN reported Friday.
He appeared in 12 games (11 starts) in 2021, missing four games because of a calf strain and one due to COVID-19, but dealt with a lingering knee injury.
This season, Gregory had 19 tackles (four tackles for loss) along with 17 quarterback hits, three forced fumbles, one fumble recovery and an interception.
Gregory, 29, will be an unrestricted free agent in March.
The Cowboys selected Gregory in the second round of the 2015 NFL Draft, and his time with the team has been marked by turmoil.
In 2016, he was suspended for 14 games for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy. He also was suspended for the entire 2017 and ’19 seasons, for two games in 2018 and for the first six games of 2020.
In 50 games (12 starts) with the Cowboys, he has 85 tackles (19 for loss), 52 quarterback hits, 16.5 sacks, eight forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and an interception.
