NFL: Rams give boot to Lucas Havrisik, bring back Brett Maher

Not all members of the Los Angeles Rams will be able to celebrate a playoff berth Monday after kicker Lucas Havrisik was waived.

With a strong foot but wayward aim, the final straw for the Rams was Havrisik’s two missed extra points during Sunday’s 26-25 road victory over the New York Giants. Without those two points, the Giants lined up for a game-winning field goal in the final seconds, but Mason Crosby’s 54-yard attempt was wide left.

The victory, and a loss by the Seattle Seahawks, put the Rams (9-7) in the playoffs after they missed out on the postseason a year ago as they attempted to defend their Super Bowl title following the 2021 season.

Rams coach Sean McVay told reporters Monday afternoon that the team will re-sign Brett Maher, who kicked in seven games for them earlier this season.

Havrisik, a rookie out of Arizona who is a Los Angeles-area native, was 15 of 20 on field-goal attempts and 19 of 22 on extra points. Havrisik was the Rams’ kicker for the past nine games, while Maher made 17 of 23 field goals and 12 of 13 extra points before being cut after Week 7.

Between the two kickers, the Rams have NFL highs in missed field goals (11) and attempts (43). Los Angeles kickers are 9 of 15 between 40 and 49 yards.

Before the Rams signed Havrisik off the Cleveland Browns’ practice squad in October, they also weighed adding Crosby, who was even signed to Los Angeles’ practice squad for a few days.
