Quarterback Kenny Pickett already has his hands full with questions about his undersized mitts.
The 2022 NFL Draft prospect from the University of Pittsburgh opted against having his throwing hand measured during the Senior Bowl weigh-in this week in Mobile, Ala.
Pickett said he is currently working on stretches to improve his hand mobility and he will wait until the NFL’s scouting combine next month for an official measurement.
In the spring, NFL scouts measured Pickett’s hands at 8 1/4 inches, smaller than any QB currently in the league.
Pickett, who was third in the 2021 Heisman Trophy voting, shrugged off the concerns, noting that it didn’t affect his play in cold-weather conditions at Pitt.
“I think that’s like the No. 1 thing for quarterbacks in the draft process every year is hand size,” Pickett told reporters on Tuesday. “The good news is that I play in Pittsburgh. Anyone that’s been to Pittsburgh knows it’s not the nicest place to play in October, November.
“So I’ve had experience playing in tough weather and I didn’t measure in this week. I just want to give the most measurement I can. I’m working on mobility things.”
Pickett won the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm award in 2021 and finished his Panthers career with more than 12,000 passing yards and 81 touchdown passes.
He is ranked as the No. 16 player overall in the upcoming draft by ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. ESPN analyst Todd McShay ranks Pickett at No. 20.
