San Francisco was awarded additional third- and fourth-round picks and the New Orleans Saints received three extra picks in the fifth round of the 2024 NFL Draft when the league released compensatory selections on Friday.

Picks are awarded for teams who had significant losses to player free agency, coaching and personnel department moves.

San Francisco’s third-round pick gained was in return for the promotion of minority candidates who left to become a head coach (DeMeco Ryans, Houston Texans) and a general manager (Ran Carthon, Tennessee Titans). The 49ers owe the selection to the Washington Commanders to complete the October trade for defensive end Chase Young.

The 49ers tied with the Los Angeles Rams for most comp picks received with five and had an NFL-high seven comp picks in 2023. The 49ers used a third-round comp pick to draft kicker Jake Moody last year.

The Rams used a fifth-round comp pick to select record-setting rookie wide receiver Puka Nacua (177th overall) in the 2023 draft.

The Jacksonville Jaguars received the highest 2024 comp pick — 96th overall — given for losing offensive tackle Jawaan Taylor in free agency to the Chiefs last March.

The Philadelphia Eagles (97th; lost defensive tackle Javon Hargrave to the 49ers in free agency), Rams (98th; assistant head coach Raheem Morris became head coach of the Falcons) and 49ers (99) also received picks at the bottom of the third round.

The New York Jets will have the final two picks in the draft in April, the 36th and 37th selections in the seventh round.
