New York Jets owner Woody Johnson on Tuesday threw his “unwavering” support behind coach Robert Saleh and general manager Joe Douglas despite the team’s 1-5 record.
Johnson made the comments from the NFL owners’ meetings in Manhattan in the aftermath of the Jets’ 54-13 loss to the New England Patriots.
Johnson said he spoke with Saleh and Douglas, just six games into Saleh’s tenure. Johnson said he has “unwavering, steadfast confidence” in what they’re doing to rebuild the team. Douglas was hired in 2019.
“I’ve been around for, this is going on 22 years, with my little absence that I had recently, and this is a good group,” Johnson told reporters. “We will get it right. Last week, you know, (was) frustrating, but now we turn the page and we’re off to the Bengals.”
Rookie quarterback Zach Wilson was injured in the game and is expected to miss 2-to-4 weeks.
“It’s just a very young team with a young quarterback,” he continued. “He’s 22 years old, he just turned 22. So he’s seeing things for the first time like a lot of the quarterbacks now, a lot of the young quarterbacks. It’s going to take him a little bit of time, but I have a lot of confidence in Zach, too.”
Backup quarterback Mike White will make his first NFL start for the Jets at home Sunday against Cincinnati (5-2).
