The Jacksonville Jaguars added a third quarterback to the 53-man roster on Wednesday, signing veteran C.J. Beathard from the Miami Dolphins practice squad.

The move reunites the team and Beathard, who was released by the Jaguars in August with an injury settlement. It seemed clear then that Jacksonville brass wanted to bring him back, however.

The quarterback suffered a groin injury in the second preseason game and under league rules, Beathard couldn’t return to the Jaguars for the length of the injury plus three weeks, general manager Trent Baalke said in August. He was free to sign with another team, however.

The Jags have additional options at quarterback now as Beathard joins starter Trevor Lawrence and backup Mac Jones. After the Jaguars lost to the Philadelphia Eagles last Sunday, Lawrence conceded he was sore.

The Dolphins now will be forced to find a quarterback for their practice squad, with Tua Tagovailoa and Skylar Thompson the only QBs on their roster.

Beathard, 30, has appeared in 32 NFL games since San Francisco selected him in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft. He has a 3-10 record as a starter with the 49ers and Jaguars (2021-23) and has completed 60.4 percent of his pass attempts for 3,886 yards with 19 touchdowns and 14 interceptions.

The Jaguars (2-7) host the Minnesota Vikings (6-2) on Sunday.
