The New York Giants hired Brian Daboll as their head coach on Friday, replacing the fired Joe Judge.
The arrival of the former Bills offensive coordinator comes one week after the Giants selected former Buffalo assistant general manager Joe Schoen to be their new GM, replacing the retired Dave Gettleman.
“It is an honor and a privilege to be named head coach of the New York Giants,” Daboll said in a news release. “Thank you to Joe Schoen for believing in me and to (owners) John Mara and Steve Tisch and their families for entrusting me with this position. My immediate goal is to assemble a coaching staff — a strong staff that emphasizes teaching and collaboration and making sure our players are put in the position to be their best and, ultimately, to win games. That’s why all of us do this. To teach, to be successful, to develop talent, and to win.”
The Giants axed Judge on Jan. 11 after he spent two seasons on the job. They went 10-23 during Judge’s tenure before making him the third straight coach to be shown the door after two seasons, following Ben McAdoo and Pat Shurmur.
“I have a pretty good idea where our fan base’s feelings are right now, and I get it,” Daboll said. “I promise we will work our tails off to put a team on the field that you will be proud to support and give us the results we all want.”
Daboll, 46, spent the past four seasons as Buffalo’s OC. He was praised for his work developing Josh Allen into one of the game’s premier quarterbacks. In 2021, the Bills ranked third in the league in scoring offense (28.4 points per game) and fifth in total offense (381.9 yards per game).
A Canadian-American from the Niagara Falls area, Daboll has also worked as an offensive coordinator for the Cleveland Browns (2009-10), Miami Dolphins (2011), Kansas City Chiefs (2012) and in college at Alabama (2017) under Nick Saban.
The Giants revealed Daboll had his second interview with the franchise Tuesday, when he spent the day at their training center in East Rutherford, N.J.
Reports this week indicated the Giants had narrowed it down to Daboll and former Dolphins coach Brian Flores as their finalists. Leslie Frazier, the Bills’ defensive coordinator, also reportedly received a second interview Friday.
NFL Network reported that the New Orleans Saints requested to interview Daboll before he came to terms with the Giants. Miami was also interested in the University of Rochester alum.
