Washington Commanders defensive tackle Phidarian Mathis was designated to return from injured reserve on Wednesday.

Mathis, 25, has been sidelined with a calf injury since he was placed on injured reserve after the team announced its final cuts this summer. Wednesday’s move opens a 21-day window for Mathis to be added to the 53-man roster.

The Commanders selected Mathis in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft out of Alabama. He sustained a torn meniscus and exited on a cart during his NFL debut against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sept. 11, 2022.
