Indianapolis Colts running back Jonathan Taylor will undergo surgery on his thumb Wednesday in Los Angeles with the hope that he can return in two to three weeks, owner Jim Irsay told The Athletic.
NFL Network reported Tuesday that the Colts have yet to make a decision on whether Taylor will need to be placed on injured reserve.
Taylor, 24, sustained the injury during Indianapolis’ 27-20 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday. He rushed for 91 yards and two touchdowns in the game.
After missing the first four games of the season due to a contract standoff and an ankle injury, Taylor ranks second on the Colts (6-5) with 414 rushing yards and four touchdowns in seven games (five starts) this season. He also has 16 catches for 137 yards and one score.
The 2021 NFL rushing champion has gained 5,194 yards from scrimmage and scored 41 touchdowns in 50 games (46 starts) since the Colts drafted him in the second round in 2020.
Zack Moss has a team-high 672 rushing yards and five TDs for the Colts, who visit the Tennessee Titans (4-7) on Sunday.
