Indianapolis Colts rookie quarterback Anthony Richardson will undergo season-ending shoulder surgery, the team announced Wednesday.

Richardson suffered an AC joint sprain in Week 5 during the Colts’ 23-16 win over the Tennessee Titans on Oct. 8. It was Richardson’s second injury of his young career; he sustained a concussion in Week 2.

“After consultation with our medical staff, Anthony, and those close to him, it has been determined that he will undergo surgery to repair his injured shoulder, which will end his season,” Colts owner Jim Irsay said. “Anthony is a competitor, and we know how difficult and disappointing this is for him and our team.

“We collected several medical opinions and we felt this was the best course of action for his long-term health. We anticipate a full recovery and there is no doubt Anthony has a promising future.”

Richardson, 21, was placed on injured reserve last week.

The Colts (3-3) lost 37-20 to the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday, with Gardner Minshew going 33-for-55 for 329 yards, a touchdown and three interceptions for Indianapolis. The Colts host the Cleveland Browns (3-2) this Sunday.

“I love the fight of this team and I’m excited for the opportunity we have ahead of us. It starts this week with Cleveland,” Irsay said.

Richardson, this year’s fourth overall pick in the draft, completed 59.5 percent of his passes for 577 yards, three touchdowns and one interception over four starts to begin his career. He also picked up 136 yards and four touchdowns on the ground.
