The Los Angeles Chargers signed quarterback Will Grier off the Patriots’ practice squad, and New England quickly filled the spot by claiming Nathan Rourke on waivers from Jacksonville on Monday.

It is the first significant move by Chargers interim general manager JoJo Wooden since the team fired Tom Telesco and head coach Brandon Staley last Friday.

The Jaguars are likely to add another quarterback considering Trevor Lawrence began the week in concussion protocol. C.J. Beathard is Jacksonville’s only practice-ready quarterback as of the end of business hours Monday.

Grier, 28, was a third-round draft pick by the Carolina Panthers in 2019. He lost both starts that season and has not appeared in a regular season game since. He completed 28 of 52 passes for 228 yards with no touchdowns and four interceptions.

After the Panthers waived Grier at the start of the 2021 season, he spent some time with the Dallas Cowboys (2021-22) and Cincinnati Bengals (2023) before being signed by New England this September.

New England lost quarterback Malik Cunningham to the Baltimore Ravens from the practice squad last week.

Rourke was waived from the active roster Saturday to clear a spot for return specialist Jamal Agnew, who was activated from the injured reserve list.

Rourke was heavily scouted in two seasons in the CFL. After passing for 3,349 yards and 25 touchdowns in 2022, he signed a three-year deal with the Jaguars before 2023 minicamp but did not make the team’s final 53-man roster in September.
