The Buffalo Bills don’t anticipate Mitchell Trubisky to return in 2022 to back up starting quarterback Josh Allen.
Trubisky will be a free agent on March 16, and head coach Sean McDermott said he expects Trubisky, 27, will have the chance to compete for a starting job somewhere else.
“It’s unrealistic to think we could have him back, but I want him to go on and do great things for him and his family,” McDermott said at a news conference at the scouting combine in Indianapolis on Tuesday.
It’s clear the Bills’ brass will send Trubisky off with their highest recommendation after his one season in Buffalo. McDermott called him a “class act” and general manager Brandon Beane said this: “He’s a marry-your-daughter type of guy.”
The Chicago Bears selected Trubisky with the second overall pick of the 2017 NFL Draft but didn’t pick up his fifth-year option. Instead, he wound up in Buffalo in 2021 and appeared in six games in mop-up time, completing six of eight passes for 43 yards and an interception. He ran for 24 yards and a touchdown.
With the Bears, he completed 64.1 percent of his pass attempts for 10,609 yards with 64 touchdowns and 37 interceptions. He added eight rushing touchdowns and 1,057 yards, and he posted a 29-21 record as a starter.
