Chicago Bears running back D’Onta Foreman will not play Monday night at the Minnesota Vikings due to ankle and shin injuries.

Foreman, 27, left last Sunday’s loss to the Detroit Lions and didn’t participate in Thursday’s practice, but logged back-to-back limited practices Friday and Saturday before he was listed as doubtful.

Foreman’s absence likely secures the starting running back role for Khalil Herbert, who returned last week from injured reserve following an ankle injury. Roschon Johnson and Travis Homer would handle backup duties for Herbert, who began the season as the starter.

When Herbert went on IR, Foreman took over the lead role and excelled, carrying the ball 92 times for 381 yards and four touchdowns along with nine catches for 55 receiving yards and another touchdown.

In six seasons with the Houston Texans (2017-18), Tennessee Titans (2020-21), Carolina Panthers (2022) and Bears, Foreman has 2,282 yards rushing on 535 carries with 14 rushing TDs. The Texans’ third-round pick in the 2017 draft also has 32 career catches for 320 yards and three more TDs.

Chicago offensive tackle Larry Borom (illness) and cornerback Tyrique Stevenson (ankle) also were ruled out for Monday’s game. Linebacker Noah Sewell (knee) previously had been ruled out.
