NFL: 49ers’ Brandon Aiyuk out for season, Deebo Samuel hospitalized

The San Francisco 49ers were hit with a double dose of rough health news regarding two wide receivers on Monday.

First, the team learned that Brandon Aiyuk tore his ACL and MCL on Sunday in San Francisco’s loss to the Kansas City Chiefs and is done for the season.

Later, coach Kyle Shanahan announced Deebo Samuel was hospitalized because of “pneumonia-like” symptoms and was dealing with fluid in his lungs.

Samuel was in on just four plays Sunday, never touching the ball, before being ruled out since he was having trouble breathing, according to Shanahan.

Aiyuk got hurt in the final minute of the first half of San Francisco’s 28-18 defeat in Santa Clara, Calif. He had two receptions for 23 yards before departing. Aiyuk was injured when he caught a 15-yard pass and was hit by two Kansas City defenders, with the blow from Chamarri Conner causing Aiyuk’s right leg to bend backward.

The 26-year-old Arizona State product had 25 catches for 374 yards and hadn’t caught a touchdown pass in seven starts this season for the 49ers (3-4). A second-team All-Pro selection in 2023, Aiyuk staged an offseason holdout before accepting a four-year, $120 million contract extension in late August.

San Francisco selected Aiyuk 25th overall in the 2020 NFL Draft. He has 294 career catches for 4,305 yards and 25 touchdowns in 69 regular-season games (67 starts).

Samuel, 28, has 20 catches for 335 yards and one touchdown this season. He also has 19 carries for 51 yards and a score.

In his career, Samuel has 303 receptions for 4,457 yards and 20 TDs, plus another 20 rushing touchdowns to go with 1,058 yards on 179 carries.
