Garret Rangel, inserted as starting quarterback Friday night against No. 13 BYU, will miss time with an injury suffered in the 38-35 loss.

While coach Mike Gundy didn’t disclose specifics about the injury, it reportedly is to his collarbone.

“He’s out,” Gundy told reporters Saturday, saying he didn’t know if the injury was season-ending.

“I don’t know, but he’ll be out a while. It’s hard for me to predict,” Gundy said.

Rangel suffered the injury during a 54-yard run in the second quarter. He was replaced by Alan Bowman.

Rangel had started in place of seventh-year senior Bowman, the 2023 starter who had guided the Cowboys (3-4) to three consecutive losses. Bowman will return to the starting role when Oklahoma State visits Baylor next weekend.

Before the injury, Rangel was 6-of-9 passing for 51 yards with a touchdown and an interception. He ran for 77 yards on five carries.

Bowman led the Cowboys to a touchdown on 17-play, 76-yard drive that took 8:26 off the clock, giving the team a 35-31 lead with 1:13 left.

Jake Retzlaff threw a 35-yard touchdown pass to Darius Lassiter with 10 seconds left to give BYU the win.

Bowman finished the game 11-of-19 passing for 85 yards with a touchdown and an interception. He added 19 yards on three carries.

This season, Bowman has completed 59.2 percent of his pass attempts for 1,738 yards with 13 touchdowns and nine interceptions.
