Hampton, Monmouth and Stony Brook have accepted invitations to the Colonial Athletic Association, the conference announced Tuesday.

The three schools will join the CAA on July 1.

“We are pleased to welcome Hampton University, Monmouth University and Stony Brook University as the newest members of the CAA,” conference commissioner Joe D’Antonio said. “All three institutions fit perfectly into the framework of the conference’s vision. … The CAA is excited for what the future holds and will continue to be focused on making decisions that ensures its membership a competitive and sustainable model.”

The addition of the three schools increases the CAA’s membership to 12 in all sports but football. They will join College of Charleston, Delaware, Drexel, Elon, Hofstra, North Carolina-Wilmington, Northeastern, Towson and William & Mary as members of the CAA in the 2022-23 season.

The addition of Hampton and Monmouth boosts the conference’s football membership total to 13. They join Albany, Delaware, Elon, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Richmond, Stony Brook, Towson, Villanova and William & Mary as members in 2022.

“This is a tremendous day for the CAA,” said Drexel president John Fry, who is also the chair of the CAA board of directors. “I am profoundly grateful for the sustained engagement of our presidents over the last 15 months, as together with our athletics directors we have forged a principled vision for the future in these turbulent times. To have these three highly regarded universities embrace these same aspirational values for college athletics is deeply gratifying.”

Hampton most recently competed in the Big South Conference, while Monmouth competed in the Big South Conference in football and the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference in basketball. Stony Brook has been a CAA football member since 2013, while it basketball teams competed in the America East.
