Cam Skattebo ran for 158 yards and two touchdowns to help Arizona State upset No. 16 Utah 27-19 on Friday night in Tempe, Ariz.

Skattebo had his third 100-yard game of the season to help the Sun Devils (5-1, 2-1 Big 12) snap a four-game losing streak in the series. Arizona State’s Sam Leavitt threw for 154 yards and a touchdown with one interception.

Micah Bernard led Utah with 129 rushing yards and a touchdown. The Utes’ Cameron Rising returned from a three-game absence caused by a hand injury, and he passed for 209 yards but also tossed three interceptions.

Utah (4-2, 1-2) took a 16-13 lead late in the third quarter on a 6-yard run from Bernard. The Sun Devils answered quickly. Skattebo stumbled through a tackle, stayed on his feet, and raced 50 yards to put Arizona State back up 20-16.

Mistakes on fourth down proved costly for Utah in the fourth quarter.

The Utes turned it over on downs at the Sun Devils 20 when Rising completed a pass to Money Parks, who came up short of the first down. Then, a fourth-down, 12-yard touchdown catch by Mycah Pittman on the ensuing Utah drive was nullified by Parks’ pass interference penalty.

It led to Cole Becker’s fourth field goal — a 46-yarder — that trimmed Arizona State’s lead to one with 5:42 left.

Skattebo sealed the upset win with his second long touchdown run, racing 47 yards to make it 27-19 with 2:41 remaining. Caleb McCullough reeled in his second interception of the game a minute later to slam the door on a Utah comeback.

Rising made his first start since injuring his throwing hand against Baylor in Week 2. The senior struggled in his return to action, tallying 97 yards and completing just 35 percent of his pass attempts before halftime.

Arizona State’s offense endured no early sluggishness. The Sun Devils scored touchdowns on two of their first three drives.

Leavitt ran 9 yards to convert a fourth-and-7 and followed with a 26-yard scoring toss to Jordyn Tyson on the next play that tied it up 6-6. Skattebo ran for 6 yards to convert another fourth down, setting up a 2-yard run from backup quarterback Jeff Sims that put Arizona State up 13-6 in the second quarter.

Utah drove inside the Sun Devils 30-yard line four times in the first half. The Utes settled for three field goals, and Rising threw an interception on the other drive.
